PURPOSE: Provided are biocidal compositions comprising mixtures of formaldehyde-releasing imidazolidines, such as 1,3-dimethylol-5,3-dimethylhydantoin, and 3-isothiazolones stabilized with low levels of copper salts. CONSTITUTION: The stable biocidal composition comprises: at least one formaldehyde-releasing imidazolidine; at least one 3-isothiazolone; a stabilizing amount of copper ion; and solvent. The formaldehyde-releasing imidazolidine is of formula(1) or is an oligomer thereof, wherein R1 and R2 are independently selected from H; CH2OH; C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkenyl or C1-C4 alkynyl optionally substituted with O, S or N; provided that at least one of R1 or R2 is CH2OH; and R3 and R4 are independently selected from H; OH; halogen; C1-C3 alkoxy; NR5C(O)NHR6; C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkenyl or C1-C4 alkynyl optionally substituted with O, S or N; and R5 and R6 are independently selected from H; CH2OH; C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 alkenyl or C1-C4 alkynyl optionally substituted with O, S or N.
