The packaging device inserts the items to be packaged in an open bag using a movable support plate (9), which is reciprocated relative to the open mouth of the bag via a displacement drive, with an air cushion provided between the underside of the support plate and the lower inside surface of the bag. An air cushion can be provided between the upper surface (19) of the support plate and the upper inside surface of the bag during the retraction of the support plate. An Independent claim for a packaging method is also included.
