A device (10) inclides a number of probes (73,77) for locating a datum reference on a partially assembled structural object, e.g. an automobile body frame. The device has a base (11) for rigid mounting to a floor. A transfer platform (20) is attached to the base so that the platform has freedom of movement in a horizontal direction. A support structure (35) is attached to the transfer platform so that it has freedom of movement in a horizontal direction, and a vertical slide support s mechanism (52) is attached to the support structure and movable with it in a vertical direction. A forming and piercing operation is performed on the automobile body between anvils (93,103).
