In a process for determining inorganic phosphate in a liquid sample, a solution of a yellow molybdo-phosphate complex is formed by adding the sample under test to an acidic molybdate solution which contains a macromolecule which may be polyvinyl pyrrolidone or a polypeptide. The yellow colouration of the solution may be measured or a hydroxylamine compound may be included in the molybdate solution and the yellow solution made alkaline to convert the complex to molybdenum blue. Preferred reagents comprise 0.85 to 3% molybdate in 0.2% to 6% acid, at least 3% in polyvinylpyrrolidone or 5% in polypeptide, 0.5% to saturated hydroxylamine compound solution, 10% to 50% alkali. |
