Carbapenem compounds, use of the same and intermediates thereof

Carbapenem compounds represented by general formula (I), and pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof, [wherein R<1> is acyl derived from an alpha -amino acid whose amino group may be substituted with lower alkyl; R<2> is hydrogen or lower alkyl; and R<3> is optionally substituted phenyl]. The compounds (I) and the salts exhibit excellent absorbability in the digestive tract when orally administered, and activated substances formed therefrom in vivo exhibit satisfactory antimicrobial activities against a wide variety of microbes. Thus, the compounds (I) and the salts are extremely useful as preventive or therapeutic agents for infectious diseases, particularly microbism.
