New (R)- or (S)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives useful for preparing metal complexes for use as asymmetric hydrogenation catalysts

(R)- or (S)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives (I) are new. (R)- or (S)-2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'-binaphthyl derivatives of formula (I) and their acid-addition salts are new: R = NH2 or guanidino; Ar = phenyl. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a chiral catalyst for asymmetric hydrogenation, comprising a metal complex of (I); (2) a process for producing a chiral alcohol, comprising asymmetric hydrogenation of a ketone using the catalyst of (1); (3) a process for asymmetric hydrogenation of an ethylenic double bond using the catalyst of (1).
