PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat type image display apparatus in which the degradation of the image quality due to unnecessary electron emitted from the cathode electrode is reduced and the dielectric breakdown between the fluorescence face and cathode electrode is prevented. SOLUTION: A flat type image display apparatus comprises a front vessel 1, a back vessel 2, a fluorescence face 5 placed in the inner face of the face part 1a of the front vessel 1, a cathode part 6 including a cathode for emitting electron, which is opposite the fluorescence face 5, a shield electrode 9 included on the inner face of side wall part 1b, and means for applying voltage higher than the potential of cathode and lower than the potential of fluorescence face 5 to the shield electrode 9.
