The engine pre-heating and passenger compartment heating method uses a latent heat store (L) through which the cooling water for the engine (M) is passed in its lower temperature range, via a first temperature-controlled bypass valve (905w). A variable throttle is connected in parallel with the bypass valve, for allowing a throttled flow through the latent heat store when the bypass valve is closed, for supplying a heating device (RH) for the passenger compartment, via a second temperature-controlled bypass valve (905i), with a thermostat activated when the engine reaches its operating temperature for activating a fan for the heating device.
