METHOD OF PREPARING METAL OXIDE PARTICLES

A method of making colloidal metal oxide particles and metal oxide-coated silica particles is disclosed. This method comprises agitating an aqueous composition comprising a solvent-insoluble seed particle material having a diameter of about 0.1 mu m to about 10 mu m and a solvent-soluble metal compound to form a dispersion of the solvent-insoluble seed particle material and a solvent-soluble metal compound to form a dispersion of the solvent-insoluble seed particle material in a solution of metal ions. A base is admixed with the dispersion to provide a metal oxide coating on the solvent-insoluble seed particle material to thereby form a particle suspension of metal oxide-coated aggregated seed particles. The particle suspension is typically agitated to form metal oxide-coated seed particles and a colloid containing metal oxide particles, recovered without agitation or used as prepared.
