A hydrogen monitoring apparatus comprises at least two electrically isolated electrochemical cells sequentially arranged relative to a flow path of at least a portion of a gas stream, each having an anode and a cathode reactive surface area; voltage regulator(s), and current monitor(s) for detecting current produced at the reactive surface areas of the cells. A hydrogen monitoring apparatus comprises at least two electrically isolated electrochemical cells (160-166) sequentially arranged relative to a flow path (190, 192) of at least a portion of a gas stream, each having an anode and a cathode reactive surface area (150, 152); voltage regulator(s); and current monitor(s) for detecting current produced at the reactive surface areas of the cells. An Independent claim is also included for a method for monitoring hydrogen and optionally carbon monoxide in a gas stream.
