The method involves transmitting data from a field bus (1), especially a PROFIBUS, to a network, on which cells with a fixed length are transferred, especially an ATM network (3), whereby the data transmission speed on the field bus is lower than on the network. A field bus message is divided at a segmentation in several partial packets, which respectively fill a cell only partially. The size of the partial packets is preferably predetermined in such way, that the time which is required by the field bus for a reception of a partial packet, is longer than the time necessary for transmitting the packet to the network.
