On a substrate (10), A p-type diamond layer (16) lies on top of an n-type layer (13), with a p-n junction between them (19). The electrons are liberated from the p-n junction directly into the vacuum, unlike prior art designs. The electrons are accelerated in the potential generated by the anode (32). Independent claims are also included for: (1) A method of making the electron emission device (2) A display incorporating the novel emitter.
