PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user not only to easily utilize a recording or reading function but also to perform recording and reading selectively or simultaneously in a polyfunctional printer having both of reading and recording functions. SOLUTION: A scanner unit 11 is mounted on the carrier 10 connected to a part of a belt 32 transmitting the drive force of a carrier motor 30 and recording heads 20, 21, 22, 23 are mounted on a carrier 19 not connected to the belt 32. When the image or the like of a manuscript 7 is read, the carrier 10 is moved to be separated from the carrier 19 to be driven independently and, when recording is applied to recording paper 7, the carrier 10 is moved to be connected to the carrier 19 and two connected carriers are driven to perform scanning for reading or recording. In this recording operation, the reading by the scanner unit is also allowed to function.
