[Also in Division H1] A control element 3 provided in parallel with a battery 4 undergoing charging comprises a series of PN junction-containing Si wafers soldered together by a material containing Pb and preferably Sn as its major constituents (see Division H1). The element 3 has a negative resistance characteristic due to the retention of heat generated towards the centre of the series of wafers by current passing therethrough, and gives protection against excess charging current as well as providing a trickle charge for the battery when it attains the required voltage. Types of batteries referred to are sealed nickel-cadmium alkaline batteries and sealed lead batteries. The optimum number and characteristics of the Si wafers are determined by the required voltage of the fully charged battery. As shown, a diode 16 may be placed in series with the battery 4 to prevent discharge through the control element 3 in the event of overheating. A voltage compensating diode 17 is also required in this case. The diodes 16, 17 may be incorporated into the same encapsulation as the element 3. |
