PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent deterioration of circularity of an outer peripheral surface of a valve lifter in an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Engaging grooves 20e are formed on valve lifter 20a sides, and a detent member 36 is attached to lifter bore 20b sides not being attached to the valve lifters 20a. Since the detent member 36 is engaged with the engaging grooves 20e of the valve lifter 20a sides, the valve lifters 20a performs reciprocating motion in the axial direction of the lifter bores 20b without rotating in the lifter bores 20b. It is thus possible to provide the detent mechanism for the valve lifters 20a avoiding deterioration of circularity of the outer peripheral surfaces 20d of the valve lifters 20a in the case where the detent member 36 is attached. Since the engaging grooves 20e are formed on the valve lifter 20a sides, the weight of the valve lifters 20a as reciprocating motion parts are lightened, and durability of the engine is improved.
