The production of an immobilized ionic liquid having an anion component and an organic cation component comprises forming, in the absence of the ionic liquid, a funtionalized support material, and treating the funtionalized support material with the ionic liquid. The production of an immobilized ionic liquid having an anion component and an organic cation component comprises forming, in the absence of the ionic liquid, a funtionalized support material containing, or bearing, a first compound which has, bonded to the support, a component that is one of anion and cation components of the ionic liquid, or a precursor to such an anion or cation component, and treating the funtionalized support material with the ionic liquid or a composition which contains at least the outer of the anion and cation components of the ionic liquid, or a precursor to the other of the anion and cation components. Independent claims are included for the following: (i) an immobilized ionic liquid having an organic cation bonded to a solid support material by a covalent bond and an inorganic anion, the combination of a cation and anion corresponding to that of an ionic liquid; and (ii) the use of an immobilized ionic liquid.
