A liquid contg. vessel, esp. for cryogenic fluid for cooling a superconductor electromagnet, comprises an external vessel, containing the liquid with a vapour space above it; inside the vessel there is a second vessel with one or more perforations in its wall below the liquid level and with a gas escape vent at the top leading into the vapour space. The electromagnetic or other object is contained within the inner vessel. If a portion of the superconductor rises in temp. to become normally conducting, the resultant evaporation forms an insulating vapour blanket within the inner vessel, thus retarding the evaporation of liquid coolant in the outer vessel to a rate which can be accepted by an associated refrigeration plant, thus avoiding loss of helium or of "sensible cooling".
|
