PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame retardant composition containing a water-soluble or hydrophilic flame-retardant component for making a resin material flame- retarded, capable of providing excellent flame-retardant effects by compounding an inexpensive and small amount thereof. SOLUTION: This flame retardant composition comprises a clathrate compound and a flame retardant compound. The clathrate compound is preferably a calix (n) arene represented by general formula (1) [R1, R2 and R3 are each H, an (un)saturated alkyl (having a substituent), an aryl (having a substituent), an alkoxy (having a substituent), a halogen atom, nitro, an acyl, carboxy, sulfonic acid or an amino (having a substituent) the same as or different from one another, and n is an integer of 4-10]. The flame retardant resin composition contains the flame retardant composition. More superior flame retardant effects are obtained by optionally compounding an inorganic filler therewith.
