PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having an excellent surface property, electromagnetic conversion characteristic and durability without through a non-magnetic layer in a thin film coating type magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium wherein a magnetic layer including at least ferromagnetic powder, carbon black and an abrasive material and having <=0.3μm dried thickness is provide on a non-magnetic substrate having <=5 nm centerline mean roughness Ra of its surface for providing the magnetic layer is characterized in that the carbon black has >=500 m2/g specific surface area by the BET method and is included in the magnetic layer at a rate of 1-8 pts.wt. to 100 pts.wt. ferromagnetic powder and the average particle size D of the abrasive material and the dried thickness T of the magnetic layer satisfy the formula (1). Formula (1): 0.5<=D/T<=1.2.
