PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently transmit images of a one-side original, a both sides original and an original, in which a one-side original and a both sides original are mixed using a simple operation. SOLUTION: A read mode selection button 24 is provided, a user is made to select from among a 1st mode in which the picture information of the one- side original is read and transmitted, a 2nd mode in which the image information of the both sides original is read and transmitted and a 3rd mode in which the image information of the original, in which the one-side original and the both sides original are mixed by operating the button 24, and the image information of the original is transmitted by using a selected mode. In the 2nd and (or) the 3rd modes, effective image information is detected from the image information read from the originals, whether to transmit the picture information to a receiver is decided, according to the detection results, and this decision reference is defined as different in the 2nd mode from in the 3rd mode.
