摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve picture quality by suppressing the delay of discharge from being generated in a discharge sustaining period and to enhance luminous efficiency while suppressing reactive currents from being generated at the time of driving gas discharge panels including a PDP. SOLUTION: In a dicharge sustaining period, discharge sustaining pulses are alternately impressed to a scanning electrode group 19a and a sustaining electrode group 19b, however, the delay of discharge is suppressed from being generated by applying a voltage whose absolute value is higher than a normal value to each discharge sustaining pulse in a short time immediately after the front edge of each discharge sustaining pulse. It is desirable to set a voltage value Vmax which is to be impressed to the pulse at the instant following the starting of the rising of the pulse to be equal to or higher than the discharge starting voltage of a discharge cell at its absolute value and to be higher than 'a normal sustaining voltage' Vs by >=50V. Moreover, the luminous efficency is enhanced by suppresscing the reactive currents from being generated while applying a voltage having a reverse polarity to the pulse in a short time from the rear edge of each discharge sustaining pulse.
