PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air conditioner for a vehicle capable of conducting stable air conditioning control without having a bad effect on propulsion of a vehicle by suitably estimating the power of a compressor, and suitably limiting the power consumption, not stopping the operation of the compressor in the case of judging that the power required for the compressor has an influence on vehicle propulsion energy. SOLUTION: This air conditioner for a vehicle includes a blower for blowing air and an interior heat exchanger for cooling or heating the blown air disposed in a duct opened to the interior of a vehicle compartment, a variable displacement compressor connected to the interior heat exchanger by a refrigerant pipe and capable of compressing a refrigerant circulated in a space up to the interior heat exchanger to vary the discharge quantity of a refrigerant to be compressed, and a vapor compression refrigerating cycle or/and a vapor compression heat pump cycle having a capacity control means for operating the discharge quantity of the variable capacity. The air conditioner is characterized by providing a power estimating means for estimating the compressor power generated during the operation of the compressor.
