PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioner excellent in operability by improving follow-up performance of a plunger for reciprocating by a change in tensile force of a chain. SOLUTION: A plunger 17 is slidingly inserted into a cylinder chamber 11 formed in a housing 10, and a female screw 20 is arranged on the opening part inner periphery of a rod inserting hole 19 formed in the plunger 17. A male screw 22 formed on the outer periphery of a screw rod 21 is threadedly engaged with the female screw 20. A return spring 28 is incorporated into the rod inserting hole 19, and a spring seat 29 is incorporated between an end part of the return spring 28 and the blocking-up end of the rod inserting hole 19. The spring seat 29 is formed of a steel ball, a wire diameter of a wire rod of the return spring 28 can be thickly set, fluidity of oil in the chamber incorporated with the return spring 28 is improved, and operability of a chain tensioner is improved.
