PURPOSE: The keyboard for inputting a character manually and by automatic recognition of the character and the structure of a key, are provided to reduce the size of the keyboard and make it convenient to input data, by assigning a plurality of characters on one key, and enabling the character desired by a user to be searched and inputted with reference to a word list, a syntax rule and probability. CONSTITUTION: It is determined whether a character is inputted by a manual input mode or an automatic input mode(1-1). The user inputs a character and a sentence by pressing a key(1-3). One of the characters assigned onto a key is selected, and then displayed on a monitor(1-4). The character inputted is stored in a memory(1-5). The next character of the same word is inputted(1-7), and a different word is inputted(1-8). A key for inputting the remaining characters of the same word is processed, and the characters related to the processed key are assembled with each other(1-11). A word list is searched and thereby the word desired by the user is found(1-12). The user checks that the searched word corresponds to the word which he/she wants to input(1-13, ..., 1-20).
