A slam-action latch (10) having a housing (40), a handle/pawl (20) having a handle portion (24), a downward extension (23) and a pawl portion (22), and a spring (44) for biasing the handle/pawl towards a closed position. The handle/pawl is pivotally secured within the housing. The pawl portion has a cammed surface that allows the latch to be slammed closed, and a perpendicular surface for engaging a keeper to secure a door, lid, or the like in a closed position. Grasping the handle portion and pulling upward or outward rotates the handle/pawl to open the latch.
