PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device which makes high contrast and high definition display possible while decreasing the region between capsules which decreases the contrast compared to a device using spherical microcapsules. SOLUTION: The space between substrates 1a, 1b is filled with a large number of microcapsules 1h and a binder 1i, and the upper and lower parts of the space are provided with a pair of electrodes 1c, 1d at least one of which is a transparent electrode. The microcapsule 1h contains electrified and drifting particles 1e and a dispersion liquid 1f for drifting. Each microcapsule 1h has such a form that the length Y in the horizontal direction is larger than the length X in the vertical direction relative to the substrates 1a, 1b.
