<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cold cathode device for improving the focusing of the emission current by inhibiting diffusion of the electrons emitted therefrom. SOLUTION: A gate electrode 50 is deposited over an insulating layer 40, of which an opening 41 has an electron emission layer 30 at the bottom. The gate electrode 50 around the opening 41 is separated from the exposed portion of the electron emission layer 30 by interposition of separating zone, on which a surface shield layer 70 is formed to coat the electron emission layer 30. This blocks the electrons emitted from the separating zone of the surface 32 of the electron emission layer towards the outside of the vertical direction of the surface 32, but discharging the electrons emitted from the center portion of the surface 32 towards the vertical direction, thus focusing the emission current.</p> |
