A rotary machine comprises two elements which are coaxial and can rotate with respect to one another, namely a first element and a second element, which have a common central axis and between which there is a substantially annular space delimited by the first and second elements, and at least two substantially cylindrical intermediate elements which are arranged between the first and second elements, the axis of which is parallel to the central axis of the first and second elements. As seen in the circumferential direction, the intermediate elements are arranged at mutual equal distances, can rotate about their own axis and are partly held fitted in recesses which are arranged in the second element and are open towards the first element. With the other part the intermediate elements project into the annular space, where the intermediate elements are substantially in sealing, rolling contact with the first element. The first element is provided with at least one cam which projects into the annular space and has a radial end face, which is in sealing, sliding contact with the second element and extends over an arc length which is greater than the arc length over which the open side of each recess in the second element extends. Each intermediate element is provided with at least one radial recess through which the at least one cam can move, all this in such a manner that the first element, the second element, the intermediate elements and the at least one cam delimit separate chambers, the volume of which changes when the first element and the second element rotate with respect to one another and the intermediate elements roll along the first element. For each intermediate element, as seen from the axis of the intermediate element, the recess in the intermediate element extends over an angle alpha , the size of alpha being such that the recess forms a significant part of a chamber with which the recess is in communication. At least the first element or the second element is provided with channels which can be brought into communication with the chambers for supplying and/or discharging a fluid. |
