PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain rare earth metal oxide fine powder suppressed in reactivity to water and suitable for use in water-based slurries, and to provide a method for producing such fine powder. SOLUTION: This method for producing rare earth metal oxide fine powder 0.05-0.50 wt.% in carbon content comprises conducting a grinding treatment of rare earth metal oxide coarse granules in an organic solvent to form a coating layer of a hydrophobic organic matter on the surface of the resultant particles, or conducting a grinding treatment of rare earth metal oxide coarse granules in an organic solvent followed by solid/liquid separation of the resultant slurry composed of the rare earth metal oxide and the organic solvent and then drying the resultant rare earth metal oxide particles to form a coating layer of a hydrophobic organic matter on the surface of the particles.
