PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that enhances the recognition performance of characters by applying ruggedness correction only to a background area. SOLUTION: A character on a background gray level is dither-processed and the linearity of the character is not maintained as shown in Figure 12. A ruggedness correction circuit 54 (Figure 2) applies processing to binary image data outputted from an image signal selection circuit A53. As shown in Figure 13, correction target pixels marked inΔare pattern-matched with peripheral pixels, pixels marked in○are set to white pixels, pixels marked in are set to black pixels. When pixels marked in are matched with patterns a-d and are black pixels, the pixels are converted into white pixels. Furthermore, when pixels marked inΔare matched with patterns e-h and are white pixels, the pixels are converted into black pixels. According to this processing, the ruggedness of the binary image data is corrected, the Figure 12 is corrected into Figure 14 and then the recognition performance of the character is enhanced.
