PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic changeover method for a transmitter-receiver that can improve the operating efficiency and to provide the transmitter-receiver. SOLUTION: The transmitter-receiver is provided with a control means 2a, a communication means 2c, a storage means 2b, a changeover means 2d, and a data transmission instruction means 2e and makes speech and data communication with external equipment A via a telephone line 6. The communication means 2c makes automatic dialing to the external device A by an external automatic dial instruction. The storage means 2b stores external device communication data sent succeedingly from the external device in succession to the automatic dial instruction. The data transmission instruction means 2e instructs data transmission. The changeover means 2d automatically switches an internal communication line to the position of a speech side after automatic dialing under the control of the control means 2a and automatically switches the internal communication line from the speech side to a data communication side on the basis of the instruction by the data transmission instruction means 2e.
