PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absorbent article capable of coping with from small to large amounts of leaks and having a high preventing effect so that it is suitably used. SOLUTION: The absorbent article comprises a liquid-permeable front sheet 1, a liquid-impermeable back sheet 2, an absorbent 3 positioned between both sheets, and side flaps 4 extending outward of the absorbent 3, with three- dimensional gathers 8 formed along the longitudinal direction of the absorbent 3 with the rear end of the three-dimensional gathers 8 being located on top of either each side flap 4 or the absorbent 1. The rear end of the three- dimensional gathers 8 is water-repellent while the front end of the gathers 8 is hydrophilic.
