The high frequency ion source has a discharge chamber (2) which is open at one end (10) for gas input. A high frequency coil (3) surrounds the discharge chamber (2) and is connected to a high frequency generator, forming an alternating high frequency electromagnetic field. An acceleration grid (11) is at the chamber open end. The chamber tapers towards the gas opening with the coil surrounding the tapering section also.
