PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically detect wrongly delivered paper sheets and missing pages of a scanned document in a scanning system for a copying machine or the like. SOLUTION: When a scanning head 36 scans a document page sequentially fed in a scanning device 12 of a processing system 10, the scanner result is stored in a memory circuit 40 as digital data via a control circuit 34. When the control circuit 34 discriminates presence of wrongly delivered paper sheets through the comparison between a predicted page number and an actually scanned page number, the control circuit 34 rearranges the data in the memory circuit 40 to execute automatic gathering of pages. The automatic gathering is conducted on the basis of simple page alternate insertion or on the basis of recognition of page identifiers such as page numbers in page common areas. In succession to the scanning, analysis and gathering as above, the processing system 10 conducts processing such as printing by a print head 38 and facsimile transmission via a phone/facsimile-interface 42.
