An inlet collector (70) is connected in parallel to at least two inlet boxes (58, 68, 88, 98) to feed the associated series of passages (50, 60, 80, 90) with the same fluid. One series of passages contains fluid inlets and outlets at two intermediate levels. A heat exchanger (15) contains a large number of fluid passages (17, 50, 60, 80, 90) and inlet boxes (41, 58, 68, 88, 98) each connecting to an associated series of passages. Outlet boxes (46, 59, 69, 89, 99) are each connected to one of the series of passages and an outlet collector (71) is connected in parallel with all the outlet boxes connected to the series of passages which are connected in parallel to the inlet collector. Fluid extraction devices (42, 44) take samples of fluid circulating in one series of passages (17) at two intermediate levels separated by a heat exchange zone (24). Fluid inlet devices (43, 45) are placed at the same intermediate levels as the extraction devices and are connected to a fluid introduction device at the same intermediate level. The exchanger is a plate exchanger with a stack of alternate parallel plates (16) and corrugated bracings. An Independent claim is also included for an air distillation installation with a source of air, an air distillation device with at least two fluid outlets and a principal heat exchange line for cooling the inlet air by heating the outlet fluids which contains a heat exchanger as described above. The fluid outlets connected to the exchanger are for gaseous nitrogen and/or residual nitrogen.
