PURPOSE: To use the generalized partial response signal(GPRS) technique for a communication system for compensating the interference between symbols. CONSTITUTION: Signal points indicating data to be transmitted are selected from a signal constellation (signal arrangement). The signal constellation contains a plurality of signal points which are regularly arranged in a polygonal area having four or more sides. The selected signal points are encoded (pre- encoded) by means of a transmitter in accordance with the GPRS technique. Since the used signal constellation is specially selected, the signal points pre- encoded for transmission occupy the same area as the polygonal area.
