PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an azamethine compound having excellent water solubility, useful as a fluorescent labeled reagent and a pH indicator in the field of medical diagnosis by using absorption characteristics in an aqueous medium due to no agglutination in an aqueous solution. SOLUTION: This azamethine compound is represented by the general formula (R is a substituted or nonsubstituted alkyl group; Q is a methine group substituted with an aromatic cyclic group or a polymethine group substituted with an aromatic cyclic group; A is an oxygen atom or sulfur atom; V1, V2 and V3 are each a hydrogen atom or a monofunctional substituent and adjoining two groups among them may be mutually bonded to form a ring; M1 is a counter ion; and m is a number required to neutralize the charge of molecule).
