PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute operation in accordance with the maximum capability of an opposite side, even if mutual functions and processing capabilities differ and to improve the convenience of a user by storing characteristic information on the other unit which is received through a digital interface on request, and selectively executing the operation with stored characteristic information when an operation instruction associated with the other unit is received. SOLUTION: A microcomputer confirms a connection state with a connected peripheral unit (S11). Characteristic information containing various pieces of information on processing capability with respect to the picture display and the sound output of a digital television are requested and received as the result of recognition (S12). The microcomputer of the digital television retrieves and reads descriptor information and transfers it to the microcomputer of a DVD reproduction unit. When it is received (S13), the microcomputer compares the characteristics of obtained data with descriptor information and discriminates whether the picture display or sound output can be executed normally.
