PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily attach/detach a lamp to/from an irradiator, stabilize a starting characteristic of the lamp for a long time, and improve service life characteristic by closely contacting and holding a proximity conductor for applying high voltage to a pipe wall of the lamp with placing the proximity conductor near the irradiator to hold the lamp. SOLUTION: This flash discharge lamp is mounted in the reflecting mirror of an irradiator 11. A lamp holder 13, consisting of a metallic member having an approximately U-shaped section, is secured to a metallic housing 12 of the irradiator 11. The lamp holder 13 also serves as a proximity conductor of the flash discharge lamp, has an approximately similar longitudinal length to a length of an arc tube 1 without lamp bases 4 at both ends thereof, and is mounted to the metallic housing 12 through insulation spacers 14 at both ends of the metallic lamp holder 13. The arc tube 1 is inserted from above the metallic lamp holder 13 so as to fit to an opening thereof, and a metallic pin 5 of the arc tube 1 is fitted to a carrier 17 of a socket 15. At the same time, the arc tube is mounted with closely contacting to the lamp holder 13 so as to at least abut on both U-shaped pieces 13a, 13b at both ends of the lamp holder 13.
