A stackable filter element has a pleated filter media of a selected length which has first and second end faces sealed by first and second annular gaskets. T he first annular gasket has an annular rib thereon and the second annular gasket includes an annular groove which is dimensioned to complement the annular rib so that th e filter element couples with a filter element having a similar gasket configuration. In this way, the filter element may be used as a single filter element or may couple with other similarly configured filter elements. The other similarly configured filter elements may be of the same length as the first filter element or of various other lengths. Accordingly, filter arrangements may be provided with single filter elements or with composite filter elements from an inventory of various filter elements. This simplifies and lowers the cost of providing filter arrangements for devices such as co- generators that filter air.
