PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep a relative distance between an object to be observed and an objective lens constant in a microscope. SOLUTION: A sample (object to be observed) 13 is housed in a chamber 11 on the aperture part of the bottom surface of which a cover glass 14 is stuck to, and a chamber solution 12 is put in the chamber 11. The solution 12 is made to circulate by a circulation device. With the change of the amount of the solution in the chamber 11, weight is changed, and the elastic deformation amount of the glass 14 and an annular ring 15 is changed, then the relative distance between the sample 13 and the lens 16 is changed. The change of the relative distance is detected by a contact 18 and a displacement sensor 19. A CPU 22 drives an actuator 113 based on a signal outputted from the sensor 19, so that a revolver 17 is moved up and down. Thus, focusing the lens 16 on the desired observation surface of the sample 13 is kept on.
