PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic tape device capable of producing a magnetic tape wherein always stable high quality data are written, by while a write voltage is being automatically set always to an optimum point with respect to a read output level even when a magnetic head and a magnetic tape having the different magnetic properties are used. SOLUTION: In the device, a feedback circuit 8 is provided for feeding back the output of a preamplifier 6 to a programmable regulator 1. When the device starts or the write-in of the data begins, the calibration is executed by a CPU 84, and digital data of the read output level at each write voltage are calculated to detect the write voltage forming a saturated point, then the write voltage is set by means of transmitting the write voltage which becomes a supersaturation point in a certain rate from the saturated point of the read output level, to the programmable regulator 1.
