A vacuum assisted water toilet includes a toilet bowl (2), an outlet conduit (3) that has a water seal (5), a water tank (8) having an impervious top volume (9) and a bottom valve (11), a valve means (6) in the outlet conduit (3) downstream from the water seal (5), a vacuum pipe (7) that extends from the top volume (9) to a section of the outlet conduit (3) located between the water seal and the valve means (6). The valve means (6) is adapted to be tight initially at the beginning of a toilet bowl flushing sequence. The outlet conduit (38) of the system (8) is dimensioned to accommodate a substantial volume of toilet bowl flushing water. The section (4) of the outlet conduit (3) is subjected to a vacuum through the vacuum pipe (7), before said volume of flushing water has left the flushing water conduit (38) to any significant extent, whereby the contents of the bowl (2) are caused initially to move through the water seal (5) before any substantial amount of the bowl flushing water has been delivered to the bowl (2).
