PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer having excellent chelate ability and biodegradability, useful as a stable liquid detergent composition by making the polymer include a specific acrylic acid-based unit, a ketone group unit and a maleic acid-based unit as constituent units. SOLUTION: This polymer comprises (A) an acrylic acid-based unit of formula I (R is H or methyl; M is H, an alkali metal or ammonium), (B) a ketone group unit of formula II and (C) a maleic acid-based unit of the formula III as constituent units in the ratio of 0.1-0.9 mol of the component A, 0.05-0.5 mol of the component B and 0-0.5 mol of the component C (the total of these two or three is 1 mol). The polymer has 500-1,000,000 number-average molecular weight. The objective polymer is obtained by reacting an acrylic acid-based compound of formula IV and, if required, a maleic acid-based compound of formula V in the presence of a radical generator with formaldehyde.
