PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and its luminance control method in which wear and tear of the device is suppressed and electric power consumption is reduced while displaying an image that has practically no large visual variation even when luminance is reduced. SOLUTION: In the luminance control method, it is discriminated whether or not a displayed image is a reduced variation image, that has no large visual variation even when its luminance is reduced by a control section 4 employing a peak luminance value detected by a peak luminance detector 5 and an average luminance value detected by an average luminance detector 6. When it is discriminated to be a reduce variation image, the luminance of video signals VS is reduced by a luminance adjusting device 3 and the image is displayed on a plasma display panel(PDP) 1.
