An automatic fever abatement system (100) includes a flow path (108), a flow device (110), a treatment substance source (112), fever-characteristic sensors (106), and a controller (104). The flow path (108) is open-ended or closed-ended and is coupled to one or more patient sites and to the flow device (110), which is coupled to the treatment substance source (112). Medication is used with open-ended paths and coolant is used with closed-ended paths. The sensors (106) measure temperature, metabolic rate, and/or other fever-affected physiological properties of various body sites. Closed-ended paths may include a return vessel (114) for treatment substance circulated through the patient. In response to prescribed input, including sensor measurements, the controller (104) repeatedly computes a supply strategy to regulate the patient's temperature according to pre-programmed specifications. The controller directs the flow device (110) to deliver treatment substance to the patient.
