The invention relates to a method and a communications system for assessing charges for the transmission of data. The inventive system comprises a first packet-based communications network (KN1), a second packet-based communications network (KN2), and a mobile communications device (MS). According to the invention, the second packet-based communications network (KN2) has at least one radio interface via which the packet data is wirelessly transmitted from and to the mobile communications device (MS). The charges for the transmission of data are assessed by at least one charge assessing device (VE) assigned to the second packet-based communications network (KN2). Said charge assessing device (VE) controls the establishment and termination of at least one communications connection between the first packet-based communications network (KN1), the second packet-based communications network (KN2) and at least one mobile communications device (MS), and quantitatively meters the data transmission over the at least one communications connection.
