SOLUTION: This alcohol dehydrogenase gene is a new gene encoding alcohol dehydrogenase comprising the amino acid sequence represented by the formula or the amino acid sequence obtained by deleting, substituting or adding one or several numbers of amino acids to the amino acid sequence represented by the formula and is used for the efficient production or the like of alcohol dehydrogenase which is useful in the determination of an alcohol or aldehyde or the production of an aldehyde useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines or the like and is derived from Sphingobacterium spiritivorum. This gene is obtained by using a chromosomal DNA of Sphingobacterium spiritivorum P1 as a template, carrying out PCR using a primer comprising the partial sequence and a DNA polymerase, separating an amplified DNA fragment and extracting it to purify.
