The shaft portion of a ball-and-socket joint for use in cars is produced by rolling a cold-forged blank to produce a head (10), shaft (20) and end section (30). A cavity (14) is formed in the head to improve its sphericity. An undulating surface (16) is formed on the inner surface of the chamber to improve the roughness of the surface of the ball.
