An apparatus for remaining capacity calculation comprises a voltage sensing unit (50) that senses the terminal voltage of a battery, a current sensing unit (40) that senses the battery current, an index calculation unit that calculates the index of polarization in the battery based on the sensed current, a control unit that controls the output voltage of an AC generator so as to keep the index of polarization within a specified range in which the degree of influence on the charged state of the battery is low, and a calculation unit that calculates the remaining capacity of the battery in accordance with the sensed terminal voltage which represents the open voltage of the battery when the index of polarization is kept within the specified range.
